Late last year, we invited G L O W Z I to curate a playlist based on whatever themes resonated with them at the time. They took the carte blanche prompt and ran with it to create this sonic archive of a hypothetical “busy Tuesday night in a [fictitious] jazz club based in Tiohtià:ke, located at the corner of ‘what-could-have-been’ and ‘what-is’.”
Excerpt from artist statement:
“Through this sonic exploration, G L O W Z I yearned to tap into artistic realms they hadn't properly explored yet - (1) the world of sonic fabulation & (2) sounds as archives. This yearning combined with the interdisciplinary artist's eagerness to learn more about local jazz histories through archives led to the creation of the fictitious club "Sun(d)'s Paradise", and more precisely to the undertaking of sonically recreating a busy Tuesday night in the latter institution.
Based on textual, photographic, and video archives of performances that unfolded at the Rockhead's Paradise (1931-1977) & The Rising Sun (1975-1992), G L O W Z I crafted a 66-minutes sonic voyage collaging recollections of both jazz club's clientele, excerpts of live performances from artists who graced the clubs' stages, and a sprinkle of sonic fabulations unveiling a desire to witness trailblazing Haitian bands in person. Prior to penetrating Sun(d)'s Paradise premises, please make sure to be well-rested and ready to dance - les mardi soirs sont toujours très chauds!”
